Design is back in China


FLOORING LAB is a collaboration between Tongji University and cadex, to conduct research, exploration and exhibition with a focus of floor design for Asia. The lab will serve Tongji University, Shanghai, and international community to inspire creative design in studio practice, community exploration, research outreach and entrepreneurship. It provides university visitors an unique visual experience and hands-on experience for designers, artists, scientists, material suppliers, academic institutions and design studios to establish a creative network. The network includes disciplines of environment, psychology, chemistry/plastic, fiber, industrial design, electrical equipments and future study. At the time of rapid development of global design, located in such a dynamic design school in Shanghai, the lab projects a global platform and strategy for Asian life style and industry to lead the world's floor material innovation. We hope to produce new design, innovative solutions and brighter future with the participation of our global faculty, students and industry leaders.




College of Design and Innovation (D&I) at Tongji University is one of the most internationally renowned colleges of design, ranking among the world’s leading design institutions.

As a member of CUMULUS, the International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media, ICSID, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, and DESIS, Design for Social Innovation & Sustainability, (D&I) was selected for three consecutive times as one of the world’s best colleges of design and courses. In 2010, the college was named one of the world’s best 18 colleges of design by PSDTUTS+ website. “Tongji – Alto Design Factory” was selected as one of the five major global university innovation platforms by the famous magazine Monocle in 2011. In 2013, D&I was selected by the internationally renowned design magazine FRAME into the “Top 30 World Leading Master Programs”. D&I ranked 34th in Art and Design according to Quacquarelli Symonds(QS) world university ranking by subject in 2016.
